Iba feliz, no sabía dónde iba, mi

To start the blog I want to publish a short
story written by my friend José Julián Frontal; he is a man of many talents: an
opera singer (baritone) that writes in his spare time, when the muses of
literature invade his outlandish mind. “Hail the bulls” narrates his first contact
with music and with the deviant Spanish “National Festivity”. A satirical
critique of the brutality that persists nowadays.
“Hail the bulls”
I read many
comments in social networks about the animal suffering in the bullring, blood
clot and blood bubbling from his body, all of it cheered by the sound of the pasodoble[i],
and that´s where it strikes me.
I was only
twelve years old when I started playing in my town´s local band. It was such a
thrill to me because it revealed my vocation for music, which made me really
happy. Town´s celebration, flower fanfares, concerts, processions, and of course:
bullfights.
I had never
been to a bullfight before, I had never felt any interest, and I don´t think I
had ever seen a real bull.
The first
time I had to play in one of these so called “celebrations”, we were seated in
a shady spot. I felt happy, I didn´t know where I was going; little dark blue pants, light blue
short-sleeve shirt, black polished shoe, my requinto[ii]
and a portable music stand where I held my scores with a wooden clip.
I saw the giggling
troupe of the authorities and their ladies as they arrived and took their
seats. The Maestro lets us know we´ll be playing El Gato Montés[iii]
(I could not imagine then that this opera would become my fetish role in the
future). The bullfighters are ready for the paseillo[iv]
and we start to play.
Up to there,
everything was fine. When the first
trumpet announced the release of the first burlaco[v],
I was astonished. I had never seen such a huge animal, beautiful and
overwhelming. I was unable to figure out the outcome of that rodeo.
The
bullfighter begins his “distinguished art”. Not much later a man appears with
two sticks crowned with sharp ends, and… -Bam! He stabs them on the bull´s
back… I was left mouth wide open, I stopped playing, could not believe what I was witnessing.
I asked my
pal next to me –Why are they doing that?!
–Just keep
playing, Jose.
I think I
played a lower scale that sounded more like a Requiem.
Then, an
obese, disgustingly fat man, wearing the ugliest hat, riding a horse, kept
stabbing the bull with a huge spear. The bull defended himself bravely, threw
the horse down and off went the fat man. The horse was lucky, but the fat man wearing
the horrible hat broke his pants off and you could see his fat ass taking up
half of the ring.
When the
moment of death arrived, the Maestro
stuck the sword completely wrong… After two more trials and two trumpet blows I
could see the bull howling in pain. Worm blood flowing from his wounds, his
tongue out, claiming –Kill me now! I don´t want to suffer!!– He was in such
pain that I started crying, and therefore having to stand the other kids
cursing at me and calling me a faggot. I could not play in front of a cruel
slaughter. I just wanted to play music because that´s what made me happy. I
didn´t want to take part in a crime.
I had to
play for five more bulls that day, and for four days on the row in that rotten
miasma they call the Fiesta Nacional[vi].
The sixth
bull dies and, as if it was the Champions League final, they cut his tail and
ears as if it was an offering from a heroic battle. The Matador is carried on
shoulders and I´m playing for everyone´s satisfaction.
I could not
understand why parents took their children to witness it.
In the end
you could see all six dead bulls piled, drowned in their own blood.
Not much
later I quitted the band, I didn´t want to be an accomplice of such atrocity.
Us, musicians, should not take part in that act of insanity.
Bulls
vomiting blood, and me, vomiting sorrow.
Whatever
anyone does is up to them, but musicians shouldn´t support this brutality.
And as the
famous duet sang: “Hail the corridas,
but without bulls” (Que vivan las corridas, pero no las de toros)[vii].

[i] Pasodoble: Style of dance to the duple meter
march-like pasodoble music.
It is modeled after the sound, drama, and movement of the Spanish and
Portuguese bullfight. The traditional couple's dance was originated in France
and then adopted in Spain and Portugal.
[ii] Requinto: 19th century Spanish for "little clarinet". Today, the word requinto, when used in relation
to a clarinet, refers to the E-flat
clarinet, also known as requint in Valencian language.
[iii] El Gato Montés (The Wild Cat): Opera in three acts composed by
Manuel Penella, premiered in 1916.
[vi] Fiesta Nacional: The “National Festivity” is how the
taurine enthusiasts refer to the bullfights.
[vii] Hail the corridas, but without bulls is a popular saying in Spain to
sarcastically criticize bullfights. The word corrida means “bullfight”, but it´s also a slang word for “ejaculation”.
